How Long Does Invisalign Take to Work?

Clear aligner therapy, such as Invisalign, can vary from patient to patient as far as the length of time of use. The average patient who needs a full case of clear aligner therapy, such as Invisalign, will take approximately one year in treatment. Sometimes treatment can go up to two years or more depending on the severity of the case.

My patients typically wear their aligners for 10 days each and most cases around 25 to 30 aligners. So this means that the patient would be wearing their trays for approximately 300 days or less than a year. This is great for clear aligner therapy because it is typically shorter than traditional braces in many cases.

Short-term process with long-term results

Sometimes Invisalign or clear aligner therapy is worn for a shorter period of time. For example, when closing a small space or rotating just one tooth, or bringing one tooth into alignment. Small movements can be quick and may need only up to five trays, which would be just 50 days of therapy. This means you would be in therapy for less than two months to correct that one little snaggletooth that you might have.

Spacing between your teeth is also very quick. Sometimes a patient may only need 15 trays, which would just be approximately six months of therapy. This is great news for patients because they can align their teeth rather quickly with a product that is transparent. Many times, the patients who wear Invisalign are adults. They can go to work and go about their daily life without having to worry of having metal in their mouth or cutting their lips or tongue on brackets.

Say goodbye to those frequent check-ups

The other great thing about Invisalign is that you don't have as many doctor visits. Braces that must be adjusted at least once per month, whereas Invisalign, you can take the trays with you and may not need to return for three months or in some cases more. Of course, everyone is different and some patients may need to be evaluated more often.

Wrapping it all up

So how long does Invisalign take to work? Your provider can let you know once they take your impressions or scan your mouth and evaluate your treatment. Then this will be discussed with you when you return to receive your trays or at a preliminary appointment to approve your case.
