What Are Dental Implants?

Dental Implant Repairs in Miami, FL

Dental implants are root substitutes that allow dental replacement devices like dentures, bridges, and crowns to be attached. They are surgically inserted into the jaw bone which makes them very stable and last lasting.

Dental implants have many benefits and can be a huge factor in the quality of life for so many people. Below outlines what you should know when it comes to both dental implants and repairing an implant.

Dental Implant Repair: Reasons And Causes

Although dental implants have a very high success rate, there may still be issues. Dental implant repair is when a dentist needs to make an adjustment of some kind due to a problem with the implant. Different problems have different causes and solutions. Below outlines the two most common types of damage that we see and what causes each type:

Dental Implant Damage. This issue is actually quite rare as the materials used are so strong, however, occasionally it happens. The tooth replacement may become worn or chipped and in very rare cases, the implant itself may be damaged. In these cases the damaged components need replacement:

  • Causes. This can sometimes be caused by a defect in the components or excess stress to the implant, like teeth grinding. In some cases, the implant doesn't properly heal, causing issues.

Loose Implants. A loose implant is a dental implant that isn't properly immobilized. This can cause mild to severe movement which can, in turn, cause pain or discomfort. Treatment typically consists of tightening the components or replacing them entirely.

  • Causes. The most common causes are issues related to placement, healing, implant stress, bone loss, and gum disease.
