Dentures vs. Dental Implants

A Permanent Option. Patients who practice proper oral hygiene can expect their dental implants to last a lifetime. In contrast, dentures have to be replaced every few years.

Stability. Like natural teeth, dental implants stay in place. Dentures move around so much that some denture wearers require adhesive to keep their dentures from shifting about their mouths.

Natural Appearance. The crown for a dental implant can be created to match the color of the patient's natural teeth. Other people can't tell if the porcelain crown is an artificial tooth. 

Quality of Life. Since dental implants and their crowns function like natural teeth, they improve the patient's quality of life in a way dentures cannot. Dentures can interfere with activities of daily living like eating and speaking. Wearing dentures is uncomfortable for some people.

They have to be removed and thoroughly cleaned regularly. The cleaning of cups and adhesives can be seen as undesirable because they are messy and expensive.

Dentures are not worn overnight.

Dentures can slip around, making it difficult to speak or eat.

Certain foods cannot be eaten with dentures, including caramel, apples, and corn on the cob.

Increased risk of gum disease if food is trapped by the dentures.

They frequently need replacement (every 3 to 6 years compared to 20+ years for dental implants).
