What Is the Downside of Dental Implants?

Implant Center of Miami • October 7, 2019

What is the downside of dental implants? This is a question that we don't receive often enough, but is quite important to our patients.

Healing time

The biggest downside of a dental implant is healing time. Unfortunately, we cannot speed up the body's process of healing enough so that the patient can receive the dental implant faster.

Many times placing a bridge to replace a single tooth can take one day or up to three weeks, whereas placing an implant to replace a single tooth can take up to seven months or more. The biggest downside of dental implants is healing time.

Surgical Complications

Another downside of dental implants is the surgical component. You will have to have a small surgery in order to place the dental implant in the bone. This may be associated with some minor soreness or pain that you wouldn't otherwise have. This is minimal and should not be a deterrent to receiving a dental implant.

Cost

Many times, the third downside of receiving a dental implant is the cost. In some offices, the cost of receiving a single dental implant can be much more than receiving a bridge to replace a single tooth. Typically in our office, the cost is about the same, which makes the decision much easier to get a dental implant.
