How Long do CEREC Crowns Last?

Implant Center of Miami • October 9, 2019

The average lifespan of a crown is five to 15 years in the mouth. Most of the time, it is not the crown that fails, but the tooth underneath. If the crown is well taken care of and in the proper function, the crown, whether CEREC or not, should last five to 15 years or more. CEREC crowns can be made out of zirconia or porcelain and several other materials.

The different types of crowns

The most common one is E-Max porcelain, which we will go over in another article, but the E-Max porcelain. can handle upwards of 450 pounds of pressure. This is greater than the traditional porcelain fused to metal crowns that were made in the past.

The zirconia crowns made in the CEREC machine, can handle upwards of 800 pounds of pressure per square inch. This is almost double that of E-Max crowns and probably triple that of traditional layered porcelain or porcelain fused to metal crowns.

What it all comes down to

When trying to figure out how long a CEREC crown will last, take a look at the mouth that it's in. If you keep up with your hygiene appointments and floss daily, then your crown is likely to last longer. It is also important to take into account the tooth that the crown is being placed on. Some teeth which have severe decay may not last as long as others that only had a chip or a small decay.

So all in all, a CEREC crown should last five to 15 years or more.
