Do Veneers Ruin Your Teeth?

Implant Center of Miami • Oct 09, 2019

Do veneers ruin your teeth? This is a question that must be discussed with your provider prior to having veneers on your teeth and at the consultation. Depending on your case, a veneer can be placed over your tooth without touching the enamel.

No-prep veneers

These are called no-prep veneers. Not everyone is a candidate for a no-prep veneers, but some good candidates are people with small teeth which have spacing. This will allow us to place a veneer over the tooth without damaging the tooth structure. Other great candidates for no-prep veneers are patients who have small or peg lateral teeth. Peg laterals are typically very small and have spaces next to them allowing us to place the porcelain right over the tooth and complete your beautiful smile.

Traditional veneers

This is an extremely conservative procedure. On the other hand, traditional veneers to change the smile of someone who has misshapen or discolored teeth may need to be a bit more invasive. Traditional veneers are placed once the teeth are prepped. Approximately one millimeter or 0.8 millimeters of enamel are removed from the face or the front of the tooth structure and sometimes can wrap around the edge of the tooth. This is removing natural enamel.

What it all comes down to

The enamel is then replaced with a very strong porcelain that is cemented to the tooth. Typically patients who receive veneers don't have sensitivity, but if you do have sensitivity, the majority of the time it will be transient or temporary. Patients who would like to have veneers must take into account the fact that your tooth needs to be prepped, but do know that the majority of veneer preps are extremely conservative and should not ruin your teeth.
