Can crowns be done in one day? Many times patients come to our office from far away, other states or other neighborhoods, and need the crowns to be done in a single day. With new technology available, this can be possible for our patients.
The patient will come in and the tooth will be prepared for the crown. Once the doctor prepares the tooth for the crown, a technician assistant or the doctor him or herself will come and take a scan of the prepared tooth. This scan file will then be sent to a computer which will design the tooth.
It will give a proposal, and may take a few minutes to adjust the proposal. Once the design is approved, it will then be sent to a milling machine or a Cerec machine. The Cerec machine should take approximately 15 minutes to mill the crown.
The crown will then be finished and sent to the oven to cure the porcelain or zirconia. This should take approximately 15 minutes depending on the type of material that is used. In our office, we have separate ovens for zirconia and porcelain to speed up the process. Historically, it would take over an hour to scinter these crowns, and now only takes us 11-13 minutes.
Once the crown has been baked, the crown will then be tried in your mouth for final cementation. The crown will be cleaned, and a bonding will be placed with cement onto your tooth. The cement will be cleaned, and the crown may be adjusted in your mouth. In total, the process may only take approximately one hour or two, depending on the amount of crowns you are doing.
So the question is, "Can crowns be done in one day?" Absolutely. Crowns can be done in one hour.
