What are dental implants made of? Dental implants are commonly made out of a material called titanium. Titanium is biocompatible to the body or friendly with the body. This means that very few people will reject a dental implant or have any allergic reaction to the dental implant. The body loves the titanium material, as does the bone.
The bone will actually integrate or cement itself to the titanium material of the dental implant. Titanium is a very strong material. This is required so that the dental implants don't break while the patient has a high chewing function. The titanium is also not magnetic. This is important for MRIs and other types of medical procedures where a magnetic structure might interfere.
Another type of dental implant is a zirconia dental implant. Zirconia dental implants are of a newer material than the titanium ones. Zirconia is also extremely biocompatible, which means the body is least likely to reject this material. Because zirconia implants have not been around for as long, the technology is not as studied as titanium implants. Zirconia is very brittle and has a higher rate of fracture. Many times, patients who receives zirconia implants receive them for specific reasons, such as a titanium or metal allergy or an aesthetic reason.
The two main materials that dental implants are made of are titanium and zirconium. Some dental implants have coatings on them. In the past, a coating was applied to the titanium dental implant to allow for better bone healing. Over time, we have realized that the bone actually likes the titanium enough that this coating is not necessary and sometimes may cause more complications. Today, dental implants are typically sandblasted or laser blasted to create little divots in the material where the bone can attach to.
It is my hope that this blog has been informative when it comes to understanding what goes into what exactly makes up dental implants. As always, I look forward to sharing more dental knowledge with you soon.
