Do Dental Bone Grafts Hurt?

Implant Center of Miami • Oct 30, 2019

When you are receiving a dental bone graft, many times the doctor is removing the tooth and placing a bone graft material on the same day. This type of bone graft is called a socket preservation. In this case, there will be no additional pain associated with placing the bone graft. The same amount of pain you would have had for the extraction will be what you have with the bone graft as well. No additional pain should come from placing this bone graft.

Many times, patients will need advanced bone grafting. In this case, a higher rate of morbidity or pain is associated with the graft. A sinus augmentation may be related to sinus pain or pain on the ridge. A ridge augmentation may also be related to swelling, pain, and bruising. The average bone graft for socket preservation does not hurt. Advanced bone grafting can be a bit more painful, but if the doctor gives you antibiotics, steroids, and anti-inflammatory medication, this pain will be decreased. Also, if the patient is responsible and places ice on the outside of their cheek for 15 minutes on and off as directed by their doctor, the pain will also decrease.
